Individual Supervision

Individualised researcher development and supervision.

The individual route is where most members begin. Foundational Training is taught one to one and is the prerequisite for every other programme at the Centre. What follows is a single research skill, chosen by the member and carried under supervision until the work is ready to submit.

The pathway

Foundation first, then one skill in depth.

  1. W1a

    Foundational Training: Narrative Review Synthesis

Taught one to one. How to read a literature critically, synthesise it, and write a narrative review that holds together as an argument rather than a summary.

  2. W1b

    Foundational Training: Grant Writing

The second half of the foundation. How a proposal is structured, how a case for support is made, and how a budget and a work plan follow from the science.

  3. Phase 2

    A chosen research skill, supervised

One skill from the immunology and genetics skillset, learned under supervision and alongside its workshop course. The phase closes with a defined research project carried to publication-ready material.

Research integrity

Taken alongside, required of everyone.

Research Integrity and Publication Ethics (W0) runs alongside the foundation and is required of every Affiliated Member. It covers authorship and contributorship, the COPE and ICMJE recommendations, and the conduct expected of anyone publishing under a CISBM affiliation.

Waivers

When the foundation can be waived.

A researcher who already works at this level may apply for a waiver of the Foundational Training. A waiver is considered where the applicant holds an h-index of 10 or above, or has at least three first-authored research publications in Q1 journals by CiteScore or JCR.

It is also considered for applicants holding an assistant professorship at any institute, or conducting research or postgraduate study at an institution in the Times Higher Education top 100. A waiver follows an application and, where appropriate, an interview to establish research independence. It is never automatic.

A waiver covers the foundation only. The skill workshops are passed by completing their project, so they cannot be waived.
